What is the facility?
KEYSA is proposing to construct and operate an indoor sports facility in Cranbrook. The facility will be a 2,440 m2air-supported dome with artificial turf to provide year-round access to field-based sports. The current concept is a partnership between KEYSA and the City of Cranbrook. KEYSA will raise funds to construct the facility and the City will provide land. This will allow us to maximize the use existing infrastructure, such as a paved/lite parking lot, concession, and club house depending on location. The current fundraising will go to the capital expenses associated with construction of the facility. After construction, KEYSA will assume responsibility for operations.
Who is involved?
KEYSA would be the primary operator and management of the facility. KEYSA is best suited to undertake this project as it is the sole organization coordinating soccer in the East Kootenay. Youth soccer currently enrolls over 500 youth annually. This profile brings existing community support and the user-base necessary to undertake this project. KEYSA is an existing organization that already has the necessary relationships established with the City of Cranbrook; a key partner in this project. Finally, KEYSA has staff available to manage the facility during operations.
One of the largest benefits of constructing this indoor sports facility is the number of potential user groups it includes. Potential users are:
Where will it be located?
KEYSA is currently negotiating support from the City of Cranbrook in the form of permitting the dome to be constructed on Cranbrook City property.
How will it be funded?
The current capital cost estimate is approximately $1,200,000. KEYSA will be submitting grant applications for part of this funding. Our target is to raise $700,000 from cash and in-kind donations. Donors will be recognized on a list of donors displayed within the facility, on the KEYSA website, and in local newspapers. Donors will be listed under the following donor tiers.
Tin (Private donors only)
$1 - $1,000
Greater than $1,000
Greater than $2,500
Greater than $5,000
Greater than $10,000
How will it operate?
Operation and maintenance will be accomplished by user fees. Administration of user groups and scheduling will also be provided by KEYSA. The facility will benefit multiple user groups and allow for year-round use, promoting a healthy life style in our community. It will provide a suitable surface conducive to field-based activities.
The City and community can expect the economic benefit of hosting indoor sporting events. Tournaments are excellent at injecting money into local businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, and local shopping. Depending on assumptions, we estimate that local businesses could expect annual economic benefits in the range of $175,000 - $250,000.
The plan presented above is the current concept. However, it is possible to expand the facility to include additional user groups, such as the Cranbrook Gymnastics Club or batting cages for the Cranbrook Bandits.
Other groups that may not directly use the indoor facility can still benefit. As an example, the Cranbrook club volleyball teams are currently finding it difficult to find court time at local schools. By providing the indoor facility, court time will become available as soccer teams move from the schools to the indoor facility.
